A New Season of In Bloom KYG

🪷…and welcoming, Nelumbo News 🪷

In short, Nelumbo is the scientific name for lotus flower. We think it’s a fun word to say and feel it represents the growth that In Bloom KYG experiences with every student we get to share time with in every season. You can learn more about this fun word here.

Going forward, readers won’t have to search for news in their inbox all the time. Nelumbo News will be archived on our website. Head right to our home page and click on Nelumbo News to find that fun, cool, family friendly place to check out, recipe to try or calming breathing technique.

🌀Autumn’s Shift 🌀

Are you feeling it? Patterns in nature are shifting and our energy follows that lead. For many, it’s a nervous and ungrounding change. Almost like a race to the clock to get the last of Summer in while getting the supplies and what ever else is needed or desired to be “ready” for the first day. If this is true for you, I’d like to encourage you to pause.

Can you take a 20 minute walk to feel the wind calling you to calm? Can you do the same with your kiddos? Maybe what we need to be ready for is a noticing of our bodies to surrender.

Less day light, another layer of clothes, crisper, cooler air and the sound of the wind are all messages that say, "let’s sit back and notice falling leaves, less pollinator friends, flowers turning to seed and the internal stirring of the cozy season ahead”.

It’s true, our 9 to 5 world is here, and more are coming, especially with the traditional school days ahead. In-fact some are extending beyond 5 p.m. with evening commitments. Getting from place to place, back to back, with little room for family dinner is hard. In my house, we try to organize first. This means we gather around the table, filling out the monthly (and weekly) calendars with what we’ve committed ourselves to. It’s not perfect. It’s a big mess most of the time. Sometimes we argue and sometimes we laugh. It hangs on the fridge like a helpful friend who reassures us about the plan for the day or week.

Balancing our calendar with pockets of simple slowing down is the challenge. Making it visual in a common space helps.

I find this balancing to find slow in the middle of speed is what the plants in the p-patch do. As the last ripening of the veggies turn with the shorter sun rays of the season, comes the release. The fruits fall, leaves turn brown and the roots ease their grasp from the soil. All are graceful reminders to return to our internal landscapes for a slower pace at being and a structured frame of time to work with.

So, let this new season be a landing place for balance, gratitude and preparation of rest with a creative sprinkling of fun, playful and simple celebrations.

We’re on the stolen ancestral lands of the Coast Salish, specifically the ancestral land of the Duwamish, Suquamish, Stillaguamish, and Muckleshoot People. We recognize that Chief Seattle is the son of Duwamish and Suquamish people who are the first peoples and stewards of these lands since as far back as anyone can remember and is documented, time immemorial. Their way of being in this world was disrupted by colonization. Now that we have grown more aware and educated about this unjust history, we listen and learn from indigenous ways of being as we practice stewardship of the soil, water, air, plants, animals and all living creatures in our communities. Please learn with us through the “Honorable Harvest” guiding principals, from Robin Wall Kimmerer’s Braiding Sweetgrass.
